A CFO's role extends far beyond accounting. It's about leadership.

Recently, I worked with the owner of a rapidly growing company in rural Iowa. I was engaged to evaluate the organization's financial needs and recommend a path forward.

It quickly became apparent that the company's financial reporting lacked credibility. The auditors had become increasingly adversarial, the lender's confidence was eroding, and the owner's personal financial exposure was growing.

Fortunately, the owner had the resources to cover the company's cash needs. However, the real challenge was restoring confidence and credibility. He knew that future lenders, investors, and other financial partners would need a clear answer to an important question:

What has changed?

The answer was financial leadership.

The key was finding the right person to lead the finance function. Technical expertise was essential, but it wasn't enough. The organization needed a leader with the experience, judgment, maturity, and credibility to guide both the company and its owner through a critical period of transformation.

The experience reinforced a lesson I've seen throughout my career:

Technical expertise opens doors.
Experience builds confidence.
Leadership drives lasting results.

The best CFOs do much more than oversee accounting. They build trust with lenders, create confidence among stakeholders, support strategic decision-making, strengthen financial maturity, and help position organizations for sustainable growth.

Before hiring your next CFO, let's talk. Selecting the right financial leader today can save significant time, money, and frustration tomorrow, while creating a stronger foundation for future success.
